Matthew Murray works as a commercial photographer on a number of commissions for major advertising agencies in the UK and abroad and for a diversity of clients. His fine art practice, editorial and advertising experience makes him perfect for setting up shots or capturing the moment. His work has also been included in a number of editorials and fashion features for i-D Magazine, Benetton COLORS Magazine, dwell, San Francisco and VISION Magazine in China.

This commercial work is paralleled by an ongoing flow of personal projects that Murray gleans from his everyday visual experiences and his extensive travels. A number of these personal projects have been exhibited in the UK and Internationally in either solo or group shows. Work has been exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery London, The Photographers Gallery, London, Huis Marseille, Foundation for Photography, Amsterdam, Paris Photo, Le Carrousel Du Louvre, Paris, France, The New Art Gallery Walsall, England, Les Recontres D’Arles Photographie, Arles, France and also The Liangzou Photo Festival, Shanghai, China.

‘His upbringing, where he has lived, the one-week break every year at Pontins Holiday Camp, his favorite bands and films he has seen, all play a part in his photography.(i-D magazine, 2004). Murray simply draws on what is around him, in an almost diary like manner.

Murray’s photographs are an amalgamation of life experiences, which instantly strike the viewer with a fundamental sense of enjoyment through his ability to capture humor simply and within a single moment.

Murray’s trademark quintessential ‘British-ness’ is decidedly coloured and unpretentious, making his work universal in its insight. These photographs unintentionally have a tendency to make the viewer smile. They constantly critique representation, by essentially capturing the bizarre in everyday life.
